ConsultingHQ provides HR advice and software to medium-sized businesses throughout New Zealand.

We’re NZ owned and operated, and have been providing HR support services for 15 years.

Our HR support team has over 118 years combined experienced, and are here to help with regular, proactive HR business support, as well as assisting with any urgent HR situations.

Tanya Gray

Director

Working with business owners and senior management teams on HR and Strategy is Tanya’s passion. With a background in HR, recruitment, sales and adult education Tanya combines the skills and knowledge to add value to her clients’ businesses at a variety of levels.

Tanya is a member of the Institute of Directors, she has a BA, a Certificate In Small Business Management and Money Management and has taught Small Business Management to entrepreneurs. Tanya is accredited in Career Development and Psychometric profiling and is completing her Post Graduate Diploma in Human Resources.

Being part of the team and understanding where the business has been, where it is now and where it is heading is crucial for the HR strategy we implement, as is having great relationships with all of the members of her clients’ businesses.

Working as an HR partner is incredibly rewarding, we get to play an integral role in these businesses assisting to achieve growth targets and identifying and improving efficiencies. Managing people is a complex task at the best of times and coaching our clients on how to best approach situations and seeing results is wonderful!

There are no two days the same in what we do which is what I love!

Vanessa has an extensive HR Generalist background providing senior business partner support across a diverse range of businesses including Retail, Professional Services, Banking, Finance, and FMCG sectors.

Working with Leadership teams and building their capability to drive high performing teams is a strong focus and she is passionate about client service and optimising business results.

She has extensive knowledge in change management, strategy implementation, employee engagement and communication, leadership development, learning and development and coaching. Vanessa enjoys working alongside clients to understand their business goals and partnering with them to engage their teams to achieve results.

Nicola Hill

HR Consultant

Nicola brings over 20 years of HR expertise, with a background that spans DHBs, civil construction, parks maintenance, and the motor vehicle parts industry.

She enjoys project work, especially large-scale initiatives where she can guide a process from start to finish and see real progress. Nicola is known for making HR processes as smooth as possible, solving problems early, and helping clients achieve the best outcomes for everyone involved.

Her career began in nursing before she transitioned into HR, completing a Bachelor of Business Studies with a major in HR and a minor in health and safety. That combination gives her a practical, people-first approach alongside strong compliance knowledge.

Outside of work, Nicola loves walking and spending time with her three daughters and three grandchildren. She has lived in England, travelled widely, and even followed the Volvo Ocean Race around the world.

She’s a trusted partner for businesses who want clear, practical HR support that keeps people supported and operations on track.

Mark's consultative style centres on understanding client needs and delivering solutions that drive efficiency and results. Known to be approachable and focused on relationship building, he helps organisations achieve sustainable growth.

With a Bachelor of Business: Management and Marketing, Mark has extensive experience managing complex employment matters such as disciplinary procedures, grievances, and performance management. His expertise helps businesses navigate challenges with confidence while ensuring fairness and legal compliance.

In addition to specialising in employment relations, Mark is skilled across end-to-end HR processes, including recruitment, onboarding, employee engagement, performance management, and policy development. He takes a strategic yet practical approach to aligning people strategies with business goals and fostering inclusive, high-performing workplace cultures.

Rachael Coates

Office & Finance Manager

Rachael has an extensive background in the FMCG industry, working with a number of leading multinational and local businesses.

Running her own company allowed Rachael to develop her business management skills, leading her into finance roles. Rachael’s most recent position was company accountant at a local sail loft.

Rachael and her husband live in Algies Bay, Warkworth, where they love to entertain and enjoy the sea views over the bay. She has a love for the water, mainly through yacht racing and cruising, and more recently from exploring Kawau Bay and the Hauraki Gulf on their Sealegs.

Cathy worked as an Executive Assistant for 15 years but has spent the last 3 years working locally as a Human Resources Manager, she had experience in all aspects of administration and a wealth of knowledge in Human Resources.

Cathy successfully completed her New Zealand diploma in Human Resources in 2016 and is passionate about the HR industry, thrives on a challenge and loves meeting new people.

Originally from the UK, Cathy arrived in New Zealand with her husband and two young children. In her spare time, she is often seen around the beaches walking her Border Terrier dogs and enjoys spending time with her family and friends.

Emily holds a Master of Arts in Literature from Victoria University and brings over a decade of experience as a marketing generalist.

She specialises in copywriting and on-page content, and oversees everything from strategy to execution to keep our marketing focused, consistent, and effective.

Marketing Executive

Chen has honed her skills as a full-stack marketer for over seven years, working across a wide range of industries, including advertising, recruitment, construction, logistics, beauty and cosmetics, technology, politics, pets, healthcare, food, home care, and human resources. She helps organisations tell their stories in ways that build meaningful connections and lasting relationships.

In 2023, Chen’s work in marketing won the Authentic and Inspiring Online Presence Award at the Australian Tradies in Business Excellence Awards. Her work is known for its strong strategy, clear storytelling, and consistent execution. She has also received multiple accolades, including Employee of the Year, Star Employee of the Month, and Top Trainee. Chen brings a balance of creativity and strategy to every project, helping brands communicate with clarity, purpose, and heart.
